Heckler

“Heckler” is an up-to-date documentary on the current state of the peanut gallery. As comedian Lewis Black mulls about this new breed of critic, “it used to be you had to have a RESUME.”

The movie follows Jamie Kennedy, frustrated at the backlash (“zero out of four waffles?”) against the 2005 Jim Carrey-less sequel “Son of the Mask.” He seeks wisdom both from those who bashed him and fellow wounded artists. Almost all of Hollywood gets a say — except for whine-core band The Used (whose repertoire ranges from “Choke Me” in 2002 to “Smother Me” in 2007). They throw down their mics when they find out Kennedy’s involvement, upset for being snubbed for the movie’s superpowered flying baby role, perhaps.

There’s tons of good advice for anyone on the giving or receiving end of criticism (though if you turn your nose up at swearing, you won’t be able to get through much of it, especially the Bill Hicks). Craig Ferguson, host of CBS’s “The Late Late Show,” and the funniest late-night host on, says it best: “Do what you love and what you’re proud of — you’re fucking bulletproof.”

Kennedy can at least count himself lucky that he’s not Britney Spears.
